The Project

This project was the foundational phase for developing a new fitness application. The purpose was to ensure that a deeply user-centered approach facilitated the guiding principles from inception. This project involved comprehensive User Research through survey creation and deployment to potential users. This was followed by ascertaining and rigorously analysing the users' experiences, preferences, and pain points.

Concurrently, a competitive analysis of three leading players in the fitness app field helped enlighten me on my path to creating a more user-friendly fitness app. The culmination of the initial user research and the competitive analysis of viable companies helped the team create immensely valuable user personas and empathy maps. All this led to a profound understanding of distinct segments within the targeted user audience.

The Purpose

The core purpose of this project was to build a robust, evidence-based understanding of both the potential user base and the competitive landscape for the proposed application. Through primary user research, the aim is to precisely identify who would use the app and what specific problems it needs to solve, ensuring its relevance and value. Competitive analysis serves to benchmark against industry leaders, uncovering their strengths, weaknesses, and unique selling points, thereby informing strategic differentiation. Ultimately, the creation of user personas and empathy maps synthesizes all gathered insights, providing empathetic and actionable blueprints for subsequent design decisions that are truly aligned with user needs and motivations.

The Parameters

The project's parameters are meticulously defined across three key stages. The first stage mandates primary research, requiring the creation and deployment of a survey to 10 real individuals representing the app's potential user base, with results summarized both qualitatively and quantitatively to derive clear insights. The second stage involves competitive research, specifically the identification and brief overview of the top three competitors in the chosen category, detailing their key features and unique selling points. Finally, the third stage necessitates the development of two distinct user personas, each fully fleshed out with an accompanying empathy map, to comprehensively capture the characteristics, goals, and emotional landscapes of the target audience segments.

The Production

The production process for this project is systematic and research-intensive, beginning with the meticulous design of a user survey crafted using best practices to effectively capture relevant experiences and pain points from potential users. Following its deployment, the survey results are rigorously summarized and visualized with charts and graphs, from which crucial insights are derived. Concurrently, a structured approach is taken to competitive research, involving the careful identification and analysis of the top three market players. All data and learnings from both primary and competitive research are then synthesized to inform the final, pivotal step: the careful construction of two detailed user personas and their corresponding empathy maps, bringing the target users to life for guiding the app's design.
